Scoop & Scales Membership
How To Join
If you are interested in joining please visit our shop or order a membership with a few clicks via MemberMojo
As a members cooperative we rely on members for their skills, knowledge, time and support. Our members also have the opportunity to influence our development and have a say in any key decisions we make. An additional perk is that as a member you will receive 5% discount on a wide range of our products.
Since May 2024, we have moved to an annual fee for membership of £10. This switch (from a lifetime £30 fee) is best practice for members cooperatives, allows us to keep an active membership base, and provides a small income line each year
Your membership fee is an investment in Scoop and Scales and is used to help to fund our development, providing capital to buy stock and equipment.
We hope that this fee won’t prove a barrier for any potential members, but if it does, please get in touch.
FAQs
“Will each member of my family need to join individually?”
We will continue to operate on the one membership per household system. If the membership is registered in one person’s name, please use that name/membership card at the till.
“The membership fee could alienate poorer members of the community”
We do not want the membership fee to be a barrier to anyone being part of the cooperative. We would urge individuals to contact the team, so that we can support them. We also remind you that you do not need to be a member to shop at Scoop and Scales and we have our Pay It Forward Board for those who would like a little help with their shopping.
“Is £10 a year enough? Should it not be higher to support the cooperative further”
We have considered the price and felt that £10 was a fair amount and is in line with other refill shops who offer membership. We will review the membership arrangements each year at the annual AGM.
“For those of us who paid £30, how will we know when our membership expires”
We have records of the date that every member joined. For those who joined and paid £30, we have allocated 3 years membership as this is in-line with the new annual rate. For example, if you joined on 01/06/22 then your membership will expire on 31/05/25.
As we load members onto the system, you should get an email to say welcome, which will have a pdf of your membership card. Then, you will be sent a reminder from Membermojo when you need to rejoin. If you want to find out when this date is, please email us.
We understand that people may feel strongly about this, so please get in touch with us if you would like a conversation.
“Could there be a concession/student rate?”
Now we have moved to an annual system, we can certainly look to having a range of membership options in the future. We would urge you to raise this at the next AGM.
“Can the digital card be added to google wallets?”
At present memberships can’t be added to a Google Wallet. There are a few options available, you can print the card and have it in your wallet; you can pin or flag the email with it on so it can be easily accessed; you can take a picture of it, or download the PDF to the home screen on your phone. Shop managers will also be able to check memberships on the back office of Membermojo.
“Is it possible to calculate the financial benefit of being a member?”
Every shopper is different, and we all buy a variety of items so it is difficult for us to say how much you will save in store on average. In store all our refill items, plus many of the items from larger suppliers have a membership discount of 5%.
Therefore, if you spend £200 on eligible items in one year, you will recoup the £10 fee. This equates to spending £16.67 per month or £3.85 a week.
