Most widely produced chocolate starts with millions of farmers who produce cocoa and ends with the billions of consumers enjoying chocolate. But what about the bit in the middle? Unfortunately this section is dominated by a handful of chocolate giants that profit from keeping the price of cocoa as low as possible, forcing the farmers producing the cocoa into extreme poverty…. In turn leading to illegal child labour and modern slavery.
These chocolate giants turn a blind eye to the living conditions of the real people who grow ‘their’ cocoa. They instead tell us about ‘certified cocoa beans’ which in truth sadly don’t guarantee humane conditions either.
